Details:

This course is for people who have little or no water activity experience, but who have a desire to gain experience, training and a qualification in helming a bell boat. Its successful completion will enable participants to use the County Bell boats to run introductory sessions for their own groups. The two days of this course will enable participants to practise and gain confidence in all the skills taught.

The course will cover all the basic skills, equipment, safety, clothing and games to enable participants to deliver bell boating introductory sessions. The philosophy and background of bell boating will also be explained.

A two day course for those wishing to gain experience and a qualification to enable them to apply for a permit to take cubs or scouts bell boating. Successful participants will be issued with the North Yorkshire Scouts Bell Boat Helm Award, however, it is recommended that participants apply for the BCU Bell Boat Helm Award, a nationally recognised award. For this a valid first aid certificate ( first response is acceptable ) must be held ( please bring a copy with you on the course ) and a payment of £17.00 to the BCU will be required. However no fee is payable if you are already a full member of the BCU.

If you are 16 to18 the BCU will register you as a trainee Bell Boat Helm until you reach the age of 18. Those over 14 can take part and will be eligible to be considered for the Scouting Activity Permit Scheme.

Participants must bring at least two sets of clothing to get wet in (clothes made of synthetic materials or thermals are best) and a pair of old trainers to wear along with a set of waterproofs (jacket & trousers) to keep the wind off. Any participant wearing jeans to go on the water will not be allowed to participate in the activity. Remember these clothes are in addition to those you will need to travel home in. Do not forget you will need a towel to get dry.

All equipment will be provided.

Participants must be able to swim 50m. Come prepared for cold conditions. You will need to bring a drink and a packed lunch. Hot water to make a drink will be available (bring your own choice of tea, coffee, soup, chocolate, etc.).
