Description
This Event is only open to registered members of the Scout Association and Girlguiding UK, however priority is given to members of Scouting in North Yorkshire.
Cost: £31 book 8 weeks in advance and pay £30 for members of North Yorkshire Scouts £35 for Girlguiding UK and other Scouts.

Payment is required with the booking form - please send a separate cheque for each event booked.
Note: Logbooks and certificates are available at an extra cost of:
- £2.50 each for the Paddle Power Scheme (14 & under)
please pre order these on the booking form if these are required.
Logbooks / Handbooks will also be available for sale on at the event (bring some money with you).
If you already have a Logbook - make sure you bring it with you.
Details:
This is a one day event introducing you to the exiting world of Paddle Sport using the NEW BCU Awards. Why not make a weekend of it and book Paddlesport on Sunday 30th August as well. This is a campsite open to the public and any Scouting members camping should comply with the Nights Away scheme. As a Scout you will undertake the NEW BCU Paddle Power Passport Award. As an Explorer Scout you will undertake the NEW BCU 1 Star Award unless completing a Paddle Power Log Book from a previous course. As a member of the Scout Network or a Leader then you will undertake the NEW BCU 1 Star Award. What’s Involved? Paddle Power Passport - This award is split into four progressive levels based on 24 topics which are grouped into Safety Awareness, Paddling Skills, Varied Experiences, and Supporting Knowledge. You may not finish the award in one day, but on completion you can gain the Scout Canoeist Badge. The award is equivalent to the old BCU 1 Star. The NEW BCU 1 Star – This award is split in to four parts Personnal Paddling Skills, Rescue Skills, Safety, Leadership and Group Skills and Theory. With enthusiasm and commitment this award and can be completed in one day. These newly formed awards are designed to introduce you to all aspects of paddlesport. Therefore, training and assessment will be tackled in both kayaks AND canoes, both as an individual and in tandem craft. What If I have an old BCU Award? If you already hold a Paddle Power Passport or the BCU 1 Star in any discipline then you will move on to the next level Paddle Power Discover or the NEW BCU 2 Star Award. At the start of the day we will ascertain your skill level and provide training to meet your requirements. All BCU training schemes use ongoing assessment. Participants must bring at least two sets of clothing to get wet in (clothes made of synthetic materials or thermals are best) and a pair of old trainers to wear along with a set of waterproofs (jacket & trousers) to keep the wind off. Any participant wearing jeans to go on the water will not be allowed to participate in the activity. Remember these clothes are in addition to those you will need to travel home in. Do not forget you will need a towel to get dry. All paddling equipment will be provided.
Participants must indicate whether they able to swim 50m or not, this is to comply with changes in Scout Association Rules.
Rule 9.42 Water Activities - General (published on 01/01/2010)
a. Members taking part in any water activity (those which take place on or in the water) must be able to demonstrate to a suitable person their ability to swim 50 metres in clothing and equipment appropriate to the activity (where a buoyancy aid or life jacket is worn for the activity this may be used for the demonstration) and keep afloat for five minutes. Anyone unable to meet these requirements is classified as a non-swimmer and must follow Rule 9.42(b).
b. A non-swimmer may take part in water activities, at the discretion of the person in charge, only if certain precautions are taken;

any non-swimmer must wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid of approved design and be in the charge of an adult (this does not apply for swimming, paddling or activities near water).

there must be no more than one non-swimmer in any craft, unless a one-to one ratio is maintained (one competent adult to one non-swimmer).

in the case of single-handed craft this should only be on C or B1 Waters (see Rule 9.44(b)) with supervision on a one-to-one basis (one competent adult to one non-swimmer).
Come prepared for cold conditions. You will need to bring a drink and a packed lunch. Hot water to make a drink will be available (bring your own choice of tea, coffee, soup, chocolate, etc.).
Booking:
Places are limited per course and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
All cancellations will incur a charge of £2.50 for administration and no refunds will be given for cancellations within the week prior to an event or for non attendance, except in exceptional circumstances.
Complete the appropriate Booking Form, please make sure all boxes are completed.
Make sure your booking form is signed by your Section Leader and Parent or Guardian.
Please use a separate form for each course and applicant.
Your fee and a stamped addressed envelope (one for each event you apply for must accompany your form).
If your Troop / Unit wishes to attend together, please attach all your forms together and send one stamped addressed envelope for each course. Make sure you have put sufficient postage on your envelope (any over charges will be billed back to you).
Booking Forms: Please make sure you are using the 2010 forms.
All bookings close one month before the event.
Adult Booking Form - to be used by anyone 18 years of age or over.
Youth Booking Form - to be used by anyone under 18 years of age.
The booking forms are .pdf format and can be filled in on a PC. Simply save the booking form to your hard drive. Then open the form and click in the box next to 'Title' and type, move to the next box by hitting the 'tab' key on your keyboard. Once you have completed the form you can then print it off for signing before posting to the address below.
