19A058 TAHWIRI Expedition Weekend

Harrogate & Nidderdale District Event - Open to all eligible Explorer Scouts in the County

TAHWIRI - For Explorer Scout teams of 4-7

This is a 2-day expedition event for teams of 4-7 Explorer Scouts which will test their navigational skills up to the standard required for the DofE Silver Award.  Teams are required to plan and walk their own routes taking in a number of manned checkpoints, some of which are compulsory. For this reason, the distance walked will vary between teams. Teams must have completed training in first aid, adventurous activity precautions, lightweight camping, use of expedition stoves and expedition cooking. The team must be self-contained, carrying all equipment and food they require for the weekend.

Participation in the event will enable the scouts to complete sections of the Navigator Stage 4 plus 2 of the one day journeys required for the Hill Walker badge (details here). It is not possible to arrange a D of E assessment over this weekend but the event is used as a practice expedition.

The teams must be completely self-contained, carrying all equipment and food for the weekend. In the opinion of the leader ALL Scouts entered must be physically and mentally capable of completing the event. Combined teams consisting of both Scouts and a max of 2 Explorer Scouts may consider entering the TEKO TEKO competition provided that the Explorer Scouts are under 16 on 28/02/2019.  Places are available for 25 teams.

Note Young Leader Explorer Scouts must be bona fide members of a District Young Leader Explorer Unit and we require the signature of the District YL Unit leader on the booking form.

Cost for the weekend will be £30 per person. This covers camping fees, radio team, administration costs, badges, hire of support vehicles and staffing expenses.

Home Contacts
May we remind leaders that we need a home contact (or contacts) for each team.  Home Contacts must be available for the whole weekend and be fully aware of their responsibilities.

Parental Consent
Will all leaders please ensure that parents are fully informed as to the nature of the event and parental consent is obtained.  Individual participant data forms requesting information necessary to manage the event, including emergency contact and medical/special needs, will be issued in March.
