Meet in the public car park at Buckden (for a map click the location in the box at the bottom).
Grid Ref (Car Park): SD 972773 (Landranger sheet 98)
This is a one day event introducing you to the principles of looking after a group on steep ground and emergency rope work in a practical setting. We will look at the various techniques available for successful negotiation of hazards including rivers along with the requirements of looking after a group of people in the outdoors. All practical aspects will be based around the Walking Group Leader / Mountain Leader Scheme from Mountain Training UK, however this is a Scout Association training course and is not an official MTUK event.
Please note that as this is a training event you will not be assessed for a permit on the same day. In line with the practice of MTUK, assessment is carried out at later date to allow skills in acquired in the training session to be practiced and consolidated before assessment. This also helps to ensure that candidates are assessed on established hill walking skills, rather than short term memory skills.
Is it for me//What can I achieve?
If you are thinking of applying for an adventurous activity permit for hillwalking or just wish to improve your skill level and knowledge base, then this is the day for you. During the day you will have an opportunity to practice the different skills and techniques with an experienced instructor to help you accomplish the finer points. You will also be guided through what is required to obtain a permit for hill walking. At the end your instructor will give you feedback and an action plan to lead to assessment if you are interested in gaining a permit.
This is a completely practically based course. After meeting up in the morning at the assembly point, you will be split into groups of similar experience level and your instructor will find out what you wish to achieve during the course and then explain the plan for the day. The day will take the form of a journey in hilly, remote terrain looking at different aspects of hazard identification and moving on steep ground.
