About The Course

Paddle Sport is FUN, EXCITING and EXHILERATING. This is a one day event introducing you to the world of Paddle Sport will help to give you the skill and confidence to paddle on flat, sheltered water in a kayak or a canoe or to develop your paddling. The session will cover paddling activitiesto progress your existing skills All in a safe relaxed atmosphere. Successful completetion may lead to the gaining of a Scout Stage Paddlesport badge and British Canoeing (BC) Paddlepower Awards / Star Award

Is It For Me / What Can I Achieve

Scout Paddlesport Badges - these are split into 4 stages and can be acheived alongside the British Canoeing (BC) awards in Paddlepower/Star Awards and reflect progress from the participants starting level to the highest skill award levels.

Paddle Power - These awards are split into four progressive levels based on 24 topics which are grouped into Safety Awareness, Paddling Skills, Varied Experiences, and Supporting Knowledge
The BC Star Awards – These awards are split in to four parts; Personnel Paddling Skills, Rescue Skills, Safety, Leadership and Group Skills and Theory. With enthusiasm and commitment the One Star award can be completed in a day but the next levels will take more time and the use of different venues.
These awards are designed to introduce you to all aspects of paddle sport. Therefore, training and assessment will be tackled in both kayaks AND canoes, both as an individual and in tandem craft.

I'm new to Paddle Sport?

As a Cub or Scout you will start on the path of the BC Paddle Power Scheme.
As an Explorer you will start on the BC Star Award scheme.
If you are a member of the Scout Network or a Leader, then you will undertake the BC Star Awards.

Your Day

On arrival, and after a centre briefing, you will have a short discussion with your coach about what you want out of the day and the format of the training. Then it's on the water for lots of FUN, learning new skills or refining old. Feedback on your achievements' will be given by your coach at the end of the day with an action plan on where to go next.

Facilities

There are toilets and showers available at Ellerton Park. These are public access and not under the control of the Scout Activities Centre. Use of these facilities will be covered in the centre brief at the start of the day.
There is ample car parking.

Kit List

You will need at least two sets of clothing to get wet in (clothes made of synthetic material or thermals are best- NO JEANS) and a pair of old trainers together with a set of waterproofs (jacket and trousers) to help keep the wind off as well as your travelling clothes and shoes. A towel is also essential.
Also don't forget a drink and packed lunch- hot and cold water will be available if you need it to make up your drink.

Further information & Logbooks

Please bring any logbooks or award books with you on the day so that they can be signed by your instructor to record your progress. If not they are available on the day.

The course capacity is 16, the minimum number required as at the 12th May 2018 is 6.
