Meet point: Callis Wood near Coneysthorpe (Grid Ref SE 695717, Explorer Map 300)
An opportunity to develop off road bike skills. No previous experience necessary, but participants must be competent cyclists. The event will follow a route of approximately 20km and involve 5 – 6 hours cycling, mostly off road. The activity counts towards the Scout Adventure Challenge and the Scout Cyclist Badge (option B).
Meet at a small layby near the junction of a minor road and track
From the south take the A64 towards Malton. At Barton Hill turn left and follw Mains Lane for about 4 miles. After passing the lake at Castle Howard, turn left at the crossroads and follow the minor road westwards for about 1 mile to a fork at the top of small hill where a track runs off to the right. The meet point is on the north side of the track a few metres past the fork.
From the north (Thirsk) take the A170 and B1571 via Sproxton and Hovingham to Slingsby. Turn right onto Slingsby Bank towards Castle Howard. Travel south for about 2 miles. Turn right at the crossroads and follow the minor road westwards for about 1 mile to a fork at the top of small hill where a track runs off to the right. The meet point is on the north side of the track a few metres past the fork.
From the east take the A64 towards York. Turn right at Barton Hill and follow directions as above, from the south.
Bikes, helmets and gloves will be provided for all riders. Participants may use their own bicycle and equipment subject to the approval of the event leader.
Water bottle, packed lunch, first aid kit, sun cream and any personal cycling gear. Waterproof jacket. Warm clothing including trousers.
